What Size Shed Do I Need?

What size storage space you need? A shed that's too big will waste money, but it has to be big enough. Here are four storage tips to help you decide.

First, see the diagram to give you an idea of what different size sheds can hold.

A second way is to tape off and fill a size on the floor, like an 8x12, in the carport or garage or wherever they have your stuff. Or if your stuff is in the house, pick one room and put the items in that room for an idea of going up or down in size compared to the room. Of course, if you have an 8 foot ceiling in a room, the shed sidewall height comes into play.

A third way to get an idea of what you need is if you have one of those pop-up canopies that have folding frames and a fabric roof, it can give a good idea of what would fit under it. Make sure to add enough space for a couple of people to stand inside the shed during bad weather and to leave floor space to set things on the floor to inspect them or get items out of a tote, for example.

This fourth tip would work if the stuff you need to store fits in totes. Once it is in totes, you'll get an idea of the space it will take up in a shed. (Combine with a method above.) Then we can build (instead of buy) shelves to fit totes accordingly. You can fill the totes, label them on the ends with index cards. The uniform size totes look great on custom shelves. Shelves and a loft could make your new shed much more organized and efficient (depending on the intended use).
